Advanced Green Cleaning Techniques
As we enhance our repertoire of green cleaning techniques, let's not overlook an essential kitchen component: the garbage disposal. Maintaining this appliance is crucial not only for kitchen hygiene but also for preventing the growth of bacteria and fungi, which are particularly problematic if you're battling a bacterial or fungal issue in your home.
Keeping Your Garbage Disposal Spotless
Garbage disposals can be a hidden source of kitchen odors and microbial growth. Here’s an effective, natural method to ensure your disposal remains clean and functional.
This garbage disposal cleaning blend utilizes a combination of baking soda, lemon and tea tree essential oils, white vinegar, ice, and fresh lemon to effectively clean and deodorize your disposal. Baking soda acts as a gentle abrasive that also neutralizes bad odors, while the lemon and tea tree essential oils provide natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, ensuring a thorough clean. White vinegar enhances the cleaning power through its natural disinfectant qualities, reacting with baking soda to create an effervescent cleaning action. Ice helps to sharpen the disposal blades and dislodge food particles, and fresh lemon adds a burst of citrus freshness while contributing additional cleaning power through its citric acid.
Recipe: Ice, Baking Soda, and Essential Oils Garbage Disposal Cleaning Blend:
Ingredient List
1 cup (224 grams) Baking Soda
30 drops Lemon Essential Oil (Citrus limon)
30 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia)
1 cup (240 ml) White Vinegar
Ice Cubes: Enough to fill the disposal
Fresh Lemon: (Optional) 1 whole lemon, quartered
Directions:
1. Fill the garbage disposal with ice cubes to the top.
2. Sprinkle 1/4 cup of the baking soda over the ice cubes.
3. Add lemon and tea tree essential oils directly to the baking soda on the ice.
4. Place the quartered lemon pieces on top of the ice.
5. Run the garbage disposal and slowly pour in the white vinegar. The combination of ice and vinegar will clean the blades, while the reaction between the baking soda and vinegar will create a fizzing action that helps lift grime and sanitize the unit.
6. Let the disposal run until the ice is chopped and the mixture has circulated thoroughly.
This blend not only ensures that your garbage disposal is clean and smelling fresh but also leverages the natural cleaning powers of simple, eco-friendly ingredients.
Final Step for Cleaning Your Garbage Disposal
After using the baking soda, essential oils, and vinegar blend to cleanse and deodorize your garbage disposal, don't forget the crucial last step: cleaning the black rubber splash guard. Take an old toothbrush and the "Sink and Tub Scrub" we created in Part 3 of our blog series. Apply a small amount of the scrub to the toothbrush, and meticulously clean both the top and underneath sides of the black flap. This part of the disposal tends to accumulate a lot of grime and food particles, so giving it a good scrub will ensure your disposal is completely clean and free from any lingering odors or bacteria.
This additional step ensures a thorough clean, addressing often-neglected areas that can harbor residual grime and contribute to unpleasant smells.
Sustainable Living Beyond Cleaning
Green cleaning is just the beginning. Let's carry these principles into all aspects of our lives. Consider implementing waste reduction by opting for refillable cleaning product containers, or conserve water by using efficient washing methods. Each small change contributes to a larger impact, reducing our ecological footprint and promoting a sustainable future.
Community and Advocacy
The power of change grows exponentially when shared. I encourage you to advocate for green cleaning within your community by sharing with your friends or even sharing your new knowledge on social media. Together, we can spread the word and make eco-friendly living the norm, not the exception.
